Tesla is ‘aggressively ramping’ up its solar and energy products, says CTO JB Straubel

Ever since Tesla took over SolarCity to become part of Tesla Energy, the deployment of solar power has been slowing down gradually for a series of reasons ranging from a restructuring to market changes.

Now Tesla is looking at a shift as it claims that demand is not a problem and now they need to increase production.

Tesla’s energy division to be hit hard by restructuring, Tesla still likes long-term prospect

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced a vague plan to flatten management and restructure the company in order to achieve profitability during the second half of the year.

We now have a better idea of what the restructuring entails after Musk announced last week that Tesla is laying off about 9% of its workforce.

Now we’ve learned about the impact of the restructuring on Tesla’s Energy.

Tesla has ‘about 11,000’ energy storage projects underway in Puerto Rico, says Elon Musk

Tesla is apparently significantly ramping up its effort to help rebuild the power grid in Puerto Rico after it was destroyed by hurricanes last year.

After having completed hundreds of energy storage project on the islands in the last few months, Tesla CEO Elon Musk now says that they have ‘about 11,000’ energy storage projects underway in Puerto Rico, which means something big is in the work.

Tesla announces new electric grid services by bundling Powerwalls and Powerpacks

Tesla has already been offering energy storage services to electric utilities with the Powerpack – like its 80 MWh Powerpack station with Southern California Edison.

But now, the company announces that it will be bundling its residential energy storage product, the Powerwall, with the Powerpack to create “a single resource of shared energy.”

Last week, we reported that Tesla quietly brought online its massive 80 MWh Powerpack station on Southern California Edison‘s grid a few weeks back. The two companies are now officially inaugurating the project at the Mira Loma substation today and Tesla CTO JB Straubel made a few comments about the company’s growing stationary energy storage business.

Electrek has learned that Mateo Jaramillo, Vice-President at Tesla Energy and one of the early members of the company’s stationary storage effort, is leaving Tesla after 7 years. The company’s energy storage division has undergone a restructuring over the last few months ahead of the merger with SolarCity, but a source familiar with the situation told us that Jaramillo’s departure from the company is unrelated to the recent shake-up at Tesla Energy.

Tesla Powerwall sees a ’30 times’ increase in demand after Australia’s blackouts

tesla-powerwall-6-units

We previously reported that Tesla Powerwall installation had picked up in Australia in recent months and when massive blackouts started to plague South Australia last month, those homeowners were able to keep their lights on. Some of their stories were popular in the country. We shared one about a 73-year-old Tesla Powerwall owner powering through South Australia’s state-wide blackout without even knowing.

In the piece, we suggested that it could lead to more people looking into home battery pack solutions and sure enough, Tesla Energy authorized distributors in Australia are now reporting a ’30 times’ increase in demand for the Tesla Powerwall and other home battery packs.

Tesla is doubling the energy capacity of the Powerpack with new battery cells from the Gigafactory

tesla-powerpack-7

Electrek has learned some details of Tesla’s ‘Powerpack 2.0’, the second generation of Tesla Energy’s scalable battery pack for commercial and utility-scale projects, which will be equipped with the new ‘2170’ battery cells. The new cell is potentially Tesla’s most important product to be unveiled this year – and yes, I’m aware Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in March.

Not much is known about Tesla’s new battery cell which was developed in partnership with Panasonic and that will soon go into production at the Gigafactory in Nevada. CEO Elon Musk and CTO JB Straubel both said that the new 2170 format cell will feature a new battery chemistry slightly different from the current 18650 cells used by Tesla in its vehicles and energy storage products.
