Tesla’s new Powerwall will be ‘flatter and more rectangular’, will be sold in stores this week, says source

Tesla will unveil its next generation Powerwall, sometimes called ‘Powerwall 2.0‘, at an event on Friday. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been hyping the product since August saying that “no other company has anything close to it.”

Now a reliable source is leaking some information about the new home battery back. (Note: we’ve been hearing similar whispers)

It is reportedly going to be ‘flatter and more rectangular’ than the first generation pictured above. And it will be displayed and sold directly in Tesla stores, unlike the first generation which was only sold through distributors, and that’s as soon as this week, according to the source.

The source is none other than “Elon’s Velvet Jacket”. No, I’m not talking about the elegant velvet jacket that Elon Musk wears at events from time to time, but a leaker going by the name ‘ElonsVelvetJacket‘ on Tesla’s subreddit.

It might sound like a joke, but he or she has amassed some credibility as a leaker over the past few months by leaking a few features hours before Tesla officially announced them, including the 60 kWh option on the Model X (since discontinued) and the return of the original leather seats.

We reached out to ElonsVelvetJacket and he or she is not revealing anything more about the new Powerwall, nothing about its energy capacity or price, which is what most of us are most interested in with the new generation.

The new Powerwall is also expected to be more easily available than the last one as Tesla is planning to ramp up production. Musk said that he expects volume production of its new Tesla Energy products in November and December 2016:

“I think it’s going to be really exciting when people see it. That’s why I expect exponential growth from there. I think it’s really going to go ballistic,” he said during a conference call with analysts in August

While not much else is known about the new Powerwall, we shared an exclusive report about the new Powerpack 2.0 earlier this month: Tesla is doubling the energy capacity of the Powerpack with new battery cells from the Gigafactory

It features twice the energy capacity found in the first generation and it is equipped with the new battery cells produced by Panasonic and Tesla at the Gigafactory.

As we reported,  Tesla builds the current version of the Powerpack by stacking in series of the same battery modules found in the Powerwall. We don’t have details of the Powerwall 2.0, but some of the improvements will certainly overlap and we would expect Tesla to deliver a significantly improved product.

Tesla will unveil its new Tesla Energy and solar products at an event that will be live-streamed from Universal Studios on Friday.
