Tesla is chosen to build another big battery in Australia after the first one proves impressive

Tesla australia

Tesla’s Powerpack project at a wind farm in South Australia garnered a lot of attention in media – mainly because of Elon Musk’s bet for Tesla to bring it online in “100 days or it will be free” and the fact that it became the most powerful battery system in the world.

But now that it is deployed, those things don’t matter much and the battery system is instead impressing with its capacity, like when it reacted within milliseconds when an Australian coal power plant removed itself from the power grid last month.

The successful use of the Powerpack system apparently inspired the neighboring state of Victoria to also choose Tesla for the deployment of another massive battery system.

Tesla unveils ‘first of many solar+storage projects’ at hospital in Puerto Rico

While we have been talking about Puerto Rico looking at long-term solutions for its energy problems and reportedly considering Tesla’s microgrid solution, the focus is currently very much on short-term solutions.

Some medical service centers are still in urgent need of stable power as evidenced by doctors performing surgery using only light from their cell phones.

Now Tesla unveils its first solar and energy storage project at a hospital in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is currently considering Tesla’s plan for a series of microgrids, says govt official

Tesla ramped up its effort to help Puerto Rico get power back after its grid was ravaged by hurricanes last month. They quickly started shipping Powerwalls, their home energy storage solution, and we reported that they started shipping Powerpacks, their bigger commercial and utility-scale battery packs, last week.

But Puerto Rico is also looking to rebuild its electric grid longterm and Tesla had its own suggestion about scaling its microgrid technology using batteries and solar power.

A government official now says that they are indeed considering the solution and thinking about launching a competitive bidding process.

First look at Tesla’s new ‘most powerful battery system in the world’ project in Australia

Tesla australia

Today, Tesla held an event to ‘celebrate’ their new giant Powerpack project in Australia. The company gave a first look at the project and confirmed that they signed the interconnection agreement with the local utility, which was the requirement to start the deadline for Elon Musk’s bet to “deliver the project in 100 days or it’s free.”

A single Tesla Powerpack battery saved this Australian town over $1.5 million in grid connection costs

Logan City in south-east Queensland installed a solar power system on their new water disinfection plant (pictured above), but they still need a grid connection for when the sun is not shining.

Instead, they installed a single Tesla Powerpack battery system to go off-grid, which they estimate saved them $1.9 million ($1.5 million USD).

Tesla is holding a ‘celebration’ event at its new giant Powerpack project on Sept 29

Part of the reason for Tesla winning the contract to build the most powerful energy storage project in the world, a 100 MW/129 MWh Powerpack system in South Australia, was Tesla’s promise that they could deliver it in 100 days or it would be free.

It looks like Tesla is on schedule since they just sent out invitations to a ‘celebration’ event at the site.

Tesla unveils a new 1 Powerpack + 1 inverter system with 6-year payback

Tesla has unveiled an interesting new Powerpack project in Rockhampton, Queensland, where they installed only one Powerpack with their own commercial inverter.

After recent massive Powerpack projects, like the 100 MW/129 MWh energy storage system announced in Australia and the Tesla solar + Powerpacks project powering Kauai, the new project shows the flexibility of Tesla’s energy storage products.

Tesla Powerpacks are being considered by Taiwan following massive blackout

Taiwan recently suffered from a massive blackout that affected millions of households on the island, resulted in millions in damages, and ended up with the economy minister resigning.

Now the Taiwanese government says that it is reaching out to Tesla to consider a similar solution as the massive 100 MW/129 MWh Powerpack system that Australia ordered from Elon Musk’s company after they had their own power outage issues.

Tesla’s giant new Powerpack project in Australia will use battery cells made by Samsung

Tesla beat 90 other competitors to win a contract for a massive 100 MW/129 MWh energy storage system in Australia, which they promised to deliver in 100 days.

That’s a bigger and more powerful energy storage system than anything else in operation today.

CEO Elon Musk gave some insights into Tesla’s plan to make it happen and surprisingly, Samsung is involved.

Tesla and Deepwater Wind are bidding for a massive new energy storage and wind power project

While Tesla’s energy storage projects have mostly been paired with solar installations, it looks like wind farms are taking notes and looking to also partner on energy storage with the company.

Tesla and Deepwater Wind are now bidding for a massive new energy storage and wind power project in Massachusetts.

Tesla wins contract for massive 100/129 MWh Powerpack system in Australia

Earlier this year, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull declared a national energy emergency as parts of the country were under prolonged power outages over the last year due to its unstable grid. South Australia got it worst with a state-wide blackout in September.

They set out to stabilize their grid by adding a large amount of energy storage and started a bidding process to install over 100 MWh of energy capacity. Tesla CEO Musk made the company’s bid very public and even promised that Tesla could deliver over 100 MWh of energy storage in 100 days or it would be free.

Today, it was announced that Tesla won the contract.
