OKAI, global manufacturer of electric mobility products both large and small, hits the streets with their new electric kick scooter; the Neon. It’s not unheard of for Electrek to feature electric scooters with monstrous capabilities, but OKAI has cleaned up the look of a feature-rich scooter, offering stellar connectivity features and hiding the rest in an ultra clean product.

I’ve got a thing for vintage design, and the Honda Super Cub-inspired CSC Monterey fully scratches that itch for me. But while vintage design often goes hand in hand with a jump in price, this retro electric scooter costs less than many electric bicycles and offers twice the performance.

The OjO Commuter Scooter made its debut at CES 2017 this week with an impressive zero emissions build and 300 pound weight capacity. This is just the latest commuter-friendly ride to arrive on the scene over the last year, following Segway’s minPRO electric transporter and others. OjO blends the familiarity of a two-wheel scooter with a 25-mile range battery that can hit speeds up to 20 miles per hour. The aluminum chassis is reinforced to carry loads up to 300-pounds, which is particularly notable for a commuter-focused ride like this.
A 500W HyperGear motor and gear system is designed for maximum torque that can handle hills “up to 15%+ grades.” This should be especially helpful in traffic-heavy cities where two-wheel transportation is making a serious play amongst younger working class citizens. Between the handles is a non-glare touchscreen display that offers a number of gauges, including speed, distance traveled, lighting controls and more.
OjO has outfitted its commuter scooter with a motion activated alarm system and wireless key fob for extra security. Additionally, it has dual Bluetooth speakers so riders can enjoy their tunes while riding. OjO is releasing its Commuter Scooter in seven colors on Amazon for $1,999.99.

Without even trying out (not available in US yet) a Gogoro scooter I love the idea. It is a 2-wheeled vehicle that runs on two Lithium battery packs which contain the same Panasonic 18650 batteries that line the bottom of the Tesla Model S and X. While a Model S contains about 7,000 of these to hit about 70-90kWh, the Gogoro’s battery packs are only 1.3kWh each (so around 100+batteries/ea) and can be exchanged in a charging bay. The 2.6kWh, according to Gogoro’s specs will take the good looking scooter about 60 miles at 60mph (0-31 in 4.2secs). While solid specs, that’s not at all what makes Gogoro a gamechanger…
