Porsche Taycan

See All Stories

Porsche Taycan is an electric car manufactured by Porsche that was first shown as a concept named Mission E at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015.

Porsche Taycan initial reaction

In 2019, the Taycan went up for pre-order, and 20,000 people placed an order without even knowing the final price. The high demand led Porsche to increase production for the Taycan.

Porsche announced that it is increasing the production capacity of the Taycan, its first all-electric car, after seeing high demand for the electric sports car.

“Taycan’s original production capacity was 20,000 units. This continues to be the requirement for the first year of production. By increasing its workforce by the end of the second quarter of 2020, Porsche is providing itself with the necessary flexibility to be able to produce more units if necessary.”

Porsche Taycan Review

In January, Electrek got to take the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S out for a test drive. Publisher Seth Weintraub visited the showroom in Atlanta. He called it the best Porsche ever.

So the Taycan, in all of its trims, is the kind of car that when you stop, people walk up to the car and swooooon. Some fans even follow you to take pictures while you are driving down the freeway. I imagine that as Porsche delivers more of these beauties, the excitement will be tempered somewhat. There are currently only around 200 delivered in the US out of a sold-out 30,000 expected worldwide over the next year or so. The Taycan is a sight to behold.

As I mentioned, my car was a bit of a Frankenstein, and the Turbo S car I had hoped to drive was riding on some tires slightly damaged during testing at the motor speedway. But the Turbo sans S was still more than enough car for me, and I got to see what it was like driving with 192-mile-range wheels.

Porsche Taycan price

The Porsche Taycan starts at $103,800 for the 4S model. The Turbo model starts at $150,900. The Turbo S model starts at $185,000.

Porsche R&D boss speaks about Tesla batteries, Macan EV, and why hydrogen fails

Michael Steiner, research chief for Porsche, doesn’t like to compare the Taycan with Tesla models. For Steiner, Tesla is going after volume segments, which means that it’s not a direct competitor to Porsche. The R&D chief spoke with Automotive News about Tesla’s battery design, why Porsche needs to keep improving its combustion engines, and the brand’s anti-hydrogen stance.

Porsche’s new ultra-powerful EV-charging park in Leipzig opens to the public

https://viptest.electrek.co/2019/02/26/porsche-macan-electric/

Porsche this week opened a showcase of the EV-charging future at its plant in Leipzig, Germany. The facility has 12 350kW DC fast-chargers and 4 22kW AC chargers. The total capacity is 7 megawatts, making it Europe’s most powerful rapid-charge park, according to Porsche. EV drivers, regardless of vehicle brand, can use the facility free of charge through March, before a standard charging plan takes effect.

Porsche Taycan gets wider video testing (roundup), range/speed compared to Tesla

We got to spend 400 miles’ worth of Interstate time in the Porsche Taycan a few weeks ago. But as more people are getting their hands on the Taycan (find local dealer test drive), we’re starting to see some new scenarios developing, and comparisons are obviously being made to Tesla’s current flagship vehicle, the Model S P100D.

Tesla Model 3 vs. Porsche Taycan charging speed tested by German publication

taycan model 3 vs

The Porsche Taycan is out and we’ve already declared it the best Porsche ever, but questions still remain about the Taycan’s low efficiency and how that affects its charging rate.  Early owners and reviews have found that the Taycan is more efficient than ratings suggest, so how does that affect its actual charge rate?

Nextmove, a German YouTube channel, put the car to the test against the most efficient EV, the Tesla Model 3, to see which one would win: Tesla’s lower peak kW rate and higher efficiency, or Taycan’s higher rate and lower efficiency.

First Drive: Taycan is the best Porsche ever and yet just the beginning

Porsche (finally!) invited us out on a drive of their flagship EV, the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S this week (find local dealer test drive). The ride was from the Daytona motor speedway to the Porsche Experience Center in South Atlanta, a distance of 450 or so Interstate miles. The car I was driving was still a pre-production model destined to be sent back to Germany and scrapped (the horror!). Almost all of the hardware was final version however and the model I was driving was a Taycan Turbo with Turbo S wheels. Let’s take a closer look at this bad boy…

Porsche Taycan Turbo S is new least-efficient EV: 68 MPGe, 192 miles EPA range

Porsche Taycan Turbo S

The EPA rating for the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S has been posted to fueleconomy.gov, and the results aren’t all that pretty. The Taycan is rated at just 68 MPGe with 192 miles of range, despite the car’s large 93 kWh battery.

While not a big drop from the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo S and its higher power delivery resulted in 1 less MPGe, and 9 miles less range than the Turbo’s 69 MPGe and 201 miles.

Teslas charge faster than Taycan, due to Porsche’s low efficiency

One of the standout features of the Porsche Taycan is its incredible promised 350kW charge rate.  Tesla has updated its Model 3 to have a 250kW charge rate, which is available on Tesla’s V3 superchargers.

At first glance, this looks like a loss for Tesla.  But it’s not.  Because of Porsche’s low efficiency, it turns out that almost every Tesla adds more range per minute at peak charge rate than the Taycan does – and some by a significant margin.
