Harley-Davidson doubles down on EVs, now making electric bikes for kids

Harley-Davidson has been making significant progress towards electric vehicles recently. But while most of the industry has focused on H-D’s flagship electric motorcycle LiveWire, Harley-Davidson has been expanding their market reach all the way down to children. That’s thanks to the company’s new acquisition of pint-sized e-bike maker StaCyc.

If the name Harley Davidson conjures up images in your head of leather-clad biker gangs flying down a desert highway while spewing exhaust from their loud chrome pipes, then perhaps you’d better think again. Harley Davidson’s CEO Matt Levatich just confirmed that the company is on track to meet its goal of releasing a fully electric motorcycle in 2019. According to Levatich, Harley Davidson wants to use the new line of electric motorcycles to help reach a younger audience focused more on utilitarian, urban transportation.

Harley-Davidson will bring to market its first all-electric bike ‘within 5 years’

Harley-Davidson unveiled its Livewire project two years ago almost to the day. While the all-electric concept with only ~60 miles of range was lacking compared to other models already available today, it showed that one of the most iconic motorcycle company, which is also obviously entrenched in internal combustion engines, is at least looking at other powertrain technologies.

At the time, Harley-Davidson made it clear that Livewire was only a concept (and good-looking one – see pictures below), but now the company confirms that it plans to bring its first electric bike to market “within the next five years”.

In a letter obtained by local news-outlets, CEO Mark Seeger said the company is so low on cash that it can’t afford to pay for an attorney for the bankruptcy filing process.
