Fisker’s new ‘400-mile range EV’ gets an unveiling date and a few teasers

Last year, renowned car designer Henrik Fisker announced a new electric car company called Fisker Inc. It’s his most significant come back to the industry since he left his previous EV startup, Fisker Automotive, in the middle of a bankruptcy back in 2013.

He has been teasing the vehicle over the past few months – claiming that it will have over 400 miles of all-electric range – and now he announced an unveiling date: August 17th.

We are not sure what to think of this attempt yet. The specs that Fisker is claiming are definitely interesting, but he is basing that on bringing some new technologies to market that have been believed to be years away, like that the powertrain will use a hybrid supercapacitor technology to allow the segment leading range and fast-charging.

Furthermore, he started his effort with this new company by promoting it through sockpuppeting on articles, which hasn’t been great for the company’s credibility.

He unveiled the design, which has never been Fisker’s problem, last year through renderings – seen above – and now some black and white pictures:

Fisker says that the sedan will be built with a “carbon and aluminum structure” to be “20% lighter than other cars its size”. He also describes the hood has been “extremely low” for a four-door sedan.

But as previously mentioned, design was never really a problem for Fisker. The Fisker Karma was almost unanimously praised for its beautiful design, but the engineering side is another can of worms. Recalls plagued the original Karma. The company had to recall all vehicles on 3 different occasions. They also had several problems with their battery supplier: A123 Systems.

With this new company, which shouldn’t be confused with the new Karma Automotive, Fisker is again linking his car company to a separate though closely linked battery company to supply the powertrain. Like A123 for the original Fisker, the new Fisker Inc. will join force with ‘Fisker Nanotech’ to develop the hybrid supercapacitors.

We should know a lot more about the plans in August.
