Canoo platform patent joins USPTO database; at least 50 more patents pending worldwide

A recent addition to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database has revealed a patent application from EV startup Canoo for its proprietary platform technology. The application provisionally filed in September of 2019 outlines all the components within the Canoo platform as well as an image. A more in-depth search has revealed that the Southern California-based automaker has been quite busy filing many other patents, too.

Canoo unveils fully-electric pickup truck set for 2023

Details of a fully-electric pickup truck from EV startup, Canoo ($GOEV) leaked today. The images and features were scheduled to be unveiled during the Motor Press Guild’s Virtual Media Day (VMD). This new truck is the third vehicle to sit upon the company’s proprietary multi-purpose platform. The new pickup truck is loaded with unique features and components that utilize every inch of that platform.

Recording artist Lido uses Canoo EV to convey futuristic cool in his latest video

When you first glance at the Canoo EV, sexy is not the word that comes to mind. Richard Kim, the vehicle’s designer, describes it as minimalistic and zen. Detractors grant it all the excitement of a 1990s minivan — maybe an Oldsmobile Silhouette or Toyota Previa — except the Canoo doesn’t know which end is forward.

On the other hand, influential ultra-cool Los Angeles-based musician Lido knows a thing or two about cool. He featured the Canoo EV in the video of his new single, which was released today.

Hyundai will use Canoo’s EV skateboard for small electric cars

Hyundai kicked off 2020 by announcing an $87 billion effort to develop dedicated electric vehicles. Today the company announced that part of this EV expansion will include a collaboration with electric start-up Canoo to co-develop an architecture for compact and sub-compact EVs.

Hyundai is promising 11 new dedicated EVs by 2025. The company expects the new platform using Canoo’s skateboard architecture to simplify the EV development process and lower costs.

Canoo eschews traditional vehicle constraints, ditches EV battery enclosure

If an EV doesn’t need a conventional engine and transmission, then why does every electric car on the market pretty much look like a gas-powered vehicle? That’s the question being asked by Canoo, the EV company actively re-thinking vehicle design for a new age of shared and connected mobility. We spoke with Canoo’s powertrain chief, who told us that the Canoo doesn’t use a battery enclosure.
