ChargePoint adds nearly 10,000 new electric car chargers to its network by taking over GE’s

ChargePoint, one of the largest electric car charging station makers and network suppliers, announced today a deal with GE to take over the management of their charging network.

It results in the quick addition of more than 1,800 commercial and about 8,000 residential charging spots to its network.

The move will quickly solidify ChargePoint’s position as the largest charging network supplier by charging station with currently over 35,900 independently-owned charging spots.

The company will update GE’s stations, both residential and commercial DuraStations and WattStations, to its software and payment system.

Pasquale Romano, CEO and President of ChargePoint, commented on the news:

“A reliable and consistent charging experience is crucial for fostering EV adoption and these are the key elements that ChargePoint has integrated into our business model for more than a decade. We are excited to expand our network with the acquisition of GE’s network and have worked closely with the GE team to ensure a seamless transition for customers and drivers. We are growing globally and are the best equipped to bring former GE customers and drivers into the ChargePoint family.”

Bryan Groulx, General Manager of GE’s EV operations, explained why they went with ChargePoint:

“Given its decade of experience, comprehensive portfolio and track record in the industry, we are confident ChargePoint is the best fit for our EV customers. We are committed to working together to ensure a smooth transition.”

It will further consolidate ChargePoint’s presence in the US, while the company is starting to enter Europe.

Earlier this year, the company raised a $82 million round led by Daimler in order to finance an expansion in Europe. It has since announced plans to deploy 200 fast-charging stations in the UK using its recently unveiled 400 kW charging technology, which is the fastest electric vehicle charging system so far.

The deployment of those stations will hopefully mark a change for the company, which has so far focused on slower level 2 chargers.
