Can Tesla’s production ramp help solve service-part shortages by end of 2020?

In Tesla’s Q4 update on Wednesday, it shared some information on 2020 production plans. One tidbit from these plans is that the company expects to no longer be production-constrained at the end of the year.

If this happens, it could finally mean an end to parts shortages and logistical constraints that have affected Tesla’s service departments for quite some time now. Things have certainly been getting better, but it would be nice to see that stigma of the Tesla experience disappear.

We were surprised to hear from sources that Tesla was letting go some employees in the service teams at several locations today because the automaker claims to be focusing on expanding its service coverage.

Tesla’s difficult service situation in Norway is a scary glimpse at potential future in other markets, Tesla says it’s on it

Norway is Tesla’s biggest market per capita and it shows no sign of slowing down. It gives us a glimpse at the potential future of other markets as they grow their own electric vehicle fleets.

Right now, it’s not a hopeful glimpse at the future in terms of service as several Norwegian Tesla owners report ridiculously long wait times and unreturned phone calls as Tesla’s service centers in Norway are overworked and low on parts.

Tesla says that it has already made improvements and customers should start to see a difference soon. Expand

In order to reassure Model 3 reservation holders that it’s going to be able to scale its service operations, Tesla announced last month that it is expanding its ‘Ranger’ program for mobile repairs at owner’s home or office.

We now learn that the program has been renamed ‘Tesla Mobile Service’ and it got a new look. Expand

Tesla says it’s ‘actively working to improve service’ in body shop network, eliminating low performers

Following recent reports of exceptionally long delays for vehicle repairs, we reached out to Tesla to get an explanation and the company acknowledged some issues with delays. They are actively working on improving repair time, according to a company representative.

But in the case of a recent highly-publicized third party repair, the company points a finger at multiple problems experienced at the body shop for the delays following an investigation. Expand

One of the main concerns of current and future Tesla owners is the company’s ability to scale its service operations after the Model 3 launch, which will add hundred of thousands of vehicles in Tesla’s global fleet.

The automaker is already having difficulties keeping up with service demand in some regions, but it has now announced a “reengineering and expansion” of its operations in order to prepare for Model 3. Expand

Tesla introduces new maintenance plans for Model S and X: more services, but with a price increase

2120x920_service_tire_rotation_w_ppl hero

While electric vehicles, like Tesla’s, require less maintenance because they are equipped with fewer moving parts than their gasoline-powered counterparts, owners are often still better off with some service and inspections. EVs are still cars and inherently complex machines traveling in often less than ideal conditions. You still want to check your wheel alignment, access fluid and coolant levels, and look for potential parts needing replacements.

That’s why Tesla offers maintenance plans and today, they introduce a new one for the Model X and an updated one for the Model S. The new plans are more expensive than what Tesla was previously offering, but they also offer more services, including hardware improvements – not unlike Tesla’s included software upgrades. Expand

The “Right to Repair”, which primarily aims to force electronic manufacturers to sell replacement parts and make their diagnostic and service manuals available to independent repair shops and consumers, is gaining some traction.

It is currently only in place in Massachusetts, which is why it’s the only state where Tesla owners can register to access repair manuals, service documents, wiring diagrams, and part information, but Tesla President Jon McNeill now says that the automaker is working on opening the program. Expand

Tesla gets a service center with an expiration date in Indiana

tesla service

Good news for the people of Indiana? Tesla has signed a lease for the first full blown service center to open in Indianapolis that would complement their lone store at Fashion Mall. While having some leased space in Zionsville for service is certainly good news to local owners, there’s also a bad news.

Tesla could face yet another potential roadblock from a bill proposed by the state government that would effectively disallow them from selling any further.

Tesla’s global fleet has 1068 cars per service center and offers room for efficiency improvements

Last month, we reported on Tesla Motors Club member Troy doing some great data collecting on Supercharger concentration. His report looked into Supercharger coverage per market versus the number of Tesla vehicles in the same markets.

The report was a way to better understand Supercharger coverage ahead of the important increase of Tesla’s fleet of vehicles with the upcoming Model 3. Aside for Superchargers, the other main concern with the imminent increase is service.

Now Troy published a similar report, but for service center concentration per market. Expand
