Tesla Model Y
Tesla Model Y is Tesla’s crossover all-electric vehicle built on the same third-generation platform as the Tesla Model 3.
The vehicle is similar to the Model 3 and features similar options as the Model 3, like the Model S is similar to the Model X.
Tesla unveiled the Model Y on March 15, 2019. Deliveries of the five-seat model began in March 2020.
Tesla is starting to ship Model Y electric SUVs by the truckload out of its factory in California ahead of the start of deliveries in a few weeks.
As we reported last week, Tesla started confirming Model Y deliveries to customers in the US.
The automaker has given some customers deliveries windows between March 15 and 30 — indicating that deliveries will start during the second half of next month.
On Friday, we reported on Tesla being spotted stockpiling some brand-new Model Y SUVs in the parking lot of its factory ahead of the start of deliveries.
Now we are receiving reports that Tesla is shipping those Model Y vehicles out of the factory by the truckload.
Tesla Model Y reviews
Since deliveries are just now taking place, we’ve not had a chance to review the car just yet. Electrek will get access to some early deliveries, so we will have a video and written review as soon as we are able to spend time with it.

Tesla Model Y price
The Model Y price starts at $52,990 (Long Range model) in the US. Worldwide pricing will fluctuate for currency conversions and tax incentives. Various upgrade options include the Performance edition (0-60 in 3.5 seconds as opposed to 4.5 seconds in the Long Range).
Additional upgrades include 20-inch induction wheels, Full Self Driving, and the seven-seater upgrade (which is not available until 2021).

Tesla Model Y specs features
With the seven seat option that is coming in 2021, it will be the first Tesla car that can hold that many people.
One of the key features of the Model Y is its 315-mile EPA range. With this rating, it becomes the most efficient SUV ever. The new range is for both versions of the Model Y currently available to order: the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor and the Model Y Performance.
Compared to the Model 3, the Model Y is:
- 2.2 inches longer
- 2.8 inches wider in terms of body width. With mirrors extended, it’s 1.6 inches wider. With mirrors folded, it’s 1.2 inches wider
- 7.1 inches taller
- .6 inch longer wheelbase
- 1.4 inch more front overhang, .2 inch less rear overhang
- 1.1 inch higher ground clearance
- 2.2 inch wider track on base wheels, 2.6/3 inch wider track front/rear on 21″ wheels
In terms of interior dimensions, the Model Y has:
- .7in/1.7in more headroom front/rear
- .9in less legroom front, 5.3in more legroom rear
- Shoulder room virtually unchanged
- .4in more front/1.8in less rear hip room
- 53 cubic feet more rated cargo volume (*the big difference is likely due to change in measurement methods between the Model 3’s three-box to the Model Y’s hatchback configuration)
And in terms of weight, the Model Y is:
- 344lbs heavier (for Long Range AWD configurations)
- 309lbs higher GVWR (refers to the “loaded” weight of the car), which means…
- 35lbs lower recommended cargo capacity (886 vs 921lbs, including cargo and occupants)
- Same weight distribution – 46%/54%
- Same towing capacity: Zero. (“Model Y is not equipped with towing.”)
Model Y Tow Hitch
The manual shows the Model Y can have a roof rack, but what about a tow hitch?
The Model Y Owner’s Manual hit the internet as Tesla started Model Y deliveries on Friday. We found some good new info from the manual, including the promise of a roof rack accessory. But unfortunately, another highly-anticipated accessory, a tow hitch, isn’t mentioned.
