VW unveils new all-electric SUV with long range and sleek interior

VW is adding yet another all-electric ID concept vehicle to its lineup. This time it’s a full-size all-electric SUV called ID ROOMZZ and a production version will launch in 2021 – first in the Chinese market.

The German automaker has been unveiling a series of ‘I.D.’ concept vehicles utilizing their new MEB platform that will launch their new all-electric vehicle effort by the end of the year.

There’s the I.D., a Golf-sized hatchback, which is expected to be their first mass-market EV for the model year 2020. VW also unveiled the I.D. VIZZION sedan, the crossover all-electric I.D. CROZZ Conceptthere’s the I.D. BUZZ electric microbus, which we’ve learned is going to be produced in Hanover in 2022, and most recently, they unveiled the ID. BUGGY, an all-electric dune buggy.

Now they are unveiling the ID ROOMZZ, a full-size SUV, in the run-up to the Shanghai Auto Show.

Here are a few images of the new electric vehicle on stage at the unveiling event:

Klaus Bischoff, chief designer at the Volkswagen brand, commented on the new electric SUV:

“This SUV is a monolith, appearing to be seamlessly machined from one solid block. The battery-powered ID. ROOMZZ moves effortlessly – silently and without emissions”,

In terms of powertrain, VW says that the ID. ROOMZZ is equipped with a 82-kWh battery for “a range of up to 450 km (WLTP) or 475 km (NEDC, China).”

They say that the battery supports 150 kW charging for an 80% charge in about half an hour.

The battery pack feeds two electric motors located on each axle with “a system output of 225 KW / 306 PS (electric 4MOTION).”

With those two motors, the ID. ROOMZZ can “accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and reach top speeds of up to 180 km/h (electronically regulated).”

VW says that the vehicle will be equipped with its latest self-driving technology and the interior is designed for it.

In autonomous mode, the seats can recline and swivel to facilitate conversations amongst passengers.

Volkswagen says that a “series version” of the ID ROOMZZ will be launched in two years and it will “initially” be for the Chinese market.
