VW is expanding its electric lineup with full-size SUV

Volkswagen announced today that it will be expanding its electric vehicle lineup with a full-size SUV called ID. ROOMZZ at the Shanghai Auto Show.

It will be the latest in a series of ‘I.D.’ concept vehicles utilizing VW’s new MEB platform.

There’s the I.D., a Golf-sized hatchback, which is expected to be their first mass-market EV for the model year 2020. VW also unveiled the I.D. VIZZION sedan, the crossover all-electric I.D. CROZZ Concept, there’s the I.D. BUZZ electric microbus, which we’ve learned is going to be produced in Hanover in 2022, and most recently, they unveiled the ID. BUGGY, an all-electric dune buggy.

Now, they are adding a full-size SUV to the lineup later this month. They released the first teaser images of the ID. ROOMZZ:

Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer at the Volkswagen brand, commented on the new vehicle:

They’ve also announced a few new innovations to be revealed in the concept:

“The I.D. ROOMZZ has a number of innovations on board: as its name suggests, the concept car sets trendsetting impulses when it comes to variability of the vehicle interior, boasting completely new seat configurations, high-quality materials and customizable light. What is more, the IQ.DRIVE systems are brought together in the I.D. ROOMZZ: in I.D. Pilot mode, the vehicle can be driven autonomously without an active driver (level 4).”

VW says that the production version of the vehicle will hit the Chinese market first in 2021 — with no timeline set for other markets.
