Just over a month after ending the program, Tesla is bringing back its referral program with a different structure. It now gives 1,000 miles of free Supercharger and the chance to win a Founders Series Model Y and a Founders Roadster signed by Elon Musk and Franz von Holzhausen.
Instead of giving rewards based on how many referrals an owner accumulates, Tesla is now giving 1,000 miles of free Supercharging to both the owner giving the referral and the new buyer receiving the referral.
The referrer also gets a chance (two if you already have unlimited Supercharging) to win cars that Tesla will give out monthly and quarterly.
Here’s what Tesla explained:
“Now, each time a friend purchases a new Tesla using your referral code, you’ll both get 1,000 miles of free Supercharging. Each referral also gives you a chance to win a Founder’s Series Model Y monthly and a Founder’s series Roadster supercar quarterly, both signed by Elon Musk and Franz von Holzhausen. Tesla owners who already have unlimited Supercharging get two chances to win with each referral.”
Tesla ended the original referral program back in February citing concerns with the cost.
As we previously reported, it resulted in Tesla having to give away over 80 new Roadsters for free.
The cost ended up higher than expected, but it helped incentivize owners to promote the company and now they are bringing it back with more reasonable incentives.
That’s definitely a much more reasonable approach to the referral program.
I especially like the fact that both the new buyer and the person making the referral is getting 1,000 miles of free Supercharging.
It sounds like you can accumulate those – meaning that if you keep referring Tesla vehicles, you could potentially never have to pay for Supercharging, which could be especially useful for Model 3 owners.
There might still be a few things to work out. For example, I have free Supercharging on my Model S, but I don’t have it on my Model 3.
Tesla is telling me that I’m getting two chances to win because it is probably looking at the Supercharger status of my Model S, but I think I’d much prefer only have one chance to win the cars and get 1,000 miles of free Supercharging for my Model 3.
Either way, it looks like a much more reasonable and fair version of the program.
