Tesla delivers massive fleet to rental car company Avis

Tesla has delivered one of its biggest fleets to date. We have learned that rental car company Avis bought several hundred Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles.

Norway has historically been Tesla’s biggest market in Europe.

Last year, the Netherlands came within fewer than 100 vehicles from beating Norway.

According to registration data, Tesla delivered 8,614 cars in Norway and 8,585 vehicles in the Netherlands.

Now we learn that if it wasn’t from Avis, one of the largest rental car companies in the world, the Netherlands would have likely surpassed Norway as Tesla’s biggest European market.

Norway’s Gjengangeren reports that Avis took delivery of a fleet of around 280 Tesla vehicles in Skoppum, a town about an hour south of Oslo.

Electrek’s Take

That’s pretty cool. I’ve seen a few rental car companies using Tesla vehicles over the years, but I feel like there are far and few between.

It would be nice to see more rental companies offering Tesla, and other electric vehicles, as options in their fleets for customers.

Interestingly, there’s a rumor that Tesla is actually going to use the new fleet delivered to Avis as service loaners. We’ve also wondered if Tesla should start its own rental company.

Instead of using its own vehicles, it would rent them through Avis when they need them.

As we previously reported, Tesla owners have experienced some important service issues in Norway last year.

There are long wait times and owners expect loaner vehicles in those cases, but they weren’t always available.

Following our report on the issue, Tesla launched new initiatives to fix the service issues in the country. CEO Elon Musk pledged to do “everything possible”.

Increasing the availability of loaner vehicles could be part of the effort to improve service in the country.
