Porsche to increase planned production of Taycan all-electric vehicle as demand soars

Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle, the Taycan, is already proving to be in higher demand than the automaker anticipated.

The German automaker says that they are going to increase the planned production of the Taycan after seeing high demand – though it could be split between the 4-door sedan version and the Cross Turismo version.

Previously, Porsche was reportedly planning to produce about 20,000 Taycan vehicles per year.

It doesn’t sound like much, but that’s an important program volume for the German premium automaker.

But now, Porsche wants to produce the vehicle at an even higher volume of production between the two versions of the vehicle.

CEO Oliver Blume told WirtschaftsWoche (translated from German):

“However, due to the positive response, we will adjust this number upwards, especially since the Cross Turismo as the first derivative of the Taycan got green light for the series.”

The Cross Turismo is a CUV version of the all-electric vehicle based on the Mission E Cross Turismo concept.

Blume didn’t confirm the new planned production volume, but it is now expected to be over 20,000 units between the two versions of the Taycan.

Porsche was encouraged by early reservations, which they opened in a few markets.

In Norway alone, the automaker says that they received close to 3,000 reservations with deposits. Normally, Porsche sells only about 600 vehicles per year in the market.

Porsche plans to bring the vehicle to production around the end of next year.

Earlier this year, the automaker said that it “enters the electric era with the new Taycan” and shared some details about its progress toward production.

The vehicle is expected to have a range of over 250 miles, but the most impressive feature is arguably the 800-volt system. It is double the voltage of most EVs and should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, which could charge the car up to 80% in only 15 minutes.
