Electrify America launches a fleet of ‘on demand’ electric vehicles with Envoy in Sacramento

As part of its settlement with the EPA and California’s Air Resource Board, VW’s Electrify America not only has to invest billions in electric vehicle infrastructure, it also has to make some other specific investments in electrification.

One of those investments was announced this week as a new fleet of electric vehicles to be used in a “on-demand” service in the city of Sacramento.

It’s part of their Green City initiative in Sacramento called ‘Sac-to-Zero’ to accelerate EV adoption in the city.

They partnered with Envoy Technologies to make the fleet available through their ‘Envoy There’ mobile app.

Right now, they are starting with a fleet of 20 VW e-Golf electric cars “available across Sacramento at over 10 multi-family properties, each with an accompanying Level 2 charging station.”

Electrify America says that most of these sites are “in disadvantaged communities where drivers can use the app to use vehicles for a myriad of uses, including personal errands or exploring job opportunities in new areas.”

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg commented on the project:

“The arrival of Envoy in Sacramento will give our residents who struggle to find reliable transportation an affordable, clean option for getting around. It’s another step in our City’s evolution into a national model of clean, shared mobility. We are thrilled to partner with Electrify America in this effort.”

Rich Steinberg, Senior Director, Marketing, Communications and Green Cities at Electrify America, added:

“Envoy is the first of multiple zero-emission vehicle initiatives to be funded through our Sac-to-Zero investments. We are excited to begin the rollout of this program in Sacramento and look forward to launching additional ZEV transportation choices for the residents of the Sacramento area.”

In a press release, Electrify America said that the “full project is anticipated to be completed early in 2019 and the fleet will eventually feature more than 140 vehicles in over 70 different locations. ”

Electrify America’s $44 million in the Green City initiative in Sacramento is part of its settlement with CARB.
