Bollinger unveils all-electric B2 pickup truck

Bollinger Motors, a New York-founded (now Michigan-based) electric vehicle startup, is leveraging its work on its unique all-electric Jeep-like truck, the Bollinger B1, to introduce an all-electric pickup truck: the B2.

Robert Bollinger, founder of Bollinger Motors, announced the new vehicle:

“The new B2 incorporates everything that we’ve learned in making the B1, and takes it in an exciting new direction. It’s always been the plan to have both the B1 and B2 start off our line up. Now that we have so much incredible data from testing our B1 prototype, we can put all of that engineering knowledge into our final four-door B1 and B2 vehicles. It’s the Pickup I always wanted and something crazy better than what’s available on the market today.”

It’s based on the B1 with the same powertrain with “dual motors, all-wheel drive, hydropneumatic suspension, in-wheel portal gear hubs, 120 kWh battery pack, large front trunk space, and patented pass-through doors for transporting long items.”

Here are a few renders of the pickup and the new lineup that Bollinger is coming up with:

The main difference with the B1 is, of course, the pickup bed, which is 4’ 1” wide by 5’ 9” long.

The startup says that with the internal cab tailgate down, the Bollinger Motors Pickup can carry full 4′ x 8′ sheets of plywood. If the rear glass is also opened, which allows storage to the top of the cab, the new B2 can fit up to 72 sheets of 4’ x 8’ plywood.

Like the B1, Bollinger designed the B2 to be a workhorse. It is a Class 3 truck with a 10,001 gross vehicle weight rating and a hauling capability of 5000 lbs.

Earlier this year, Bollinger partnered with Optimal, Inc. of Plymouth, MI to “help bring the Bollinger B1 all-electric, all-wheel-drive Sport Utility Truck to production.”

The two companies now plan on finalizing their work on the Bollinger B1 by the end of 2018, which will be on target for a late 2019 start of production.

With the unveiling of B2, the company says that it is in “the final stages of engineering development for their first B1 truck” and that they aim to “manufacture the B2 on the same assembly line as the B1 in 2020.”

Bollinger Motors says that they will be “announcing a full suite of vehicle options, pricing, and delivery details in 2019.”

Electrek’s Take

It’s a natural product to leverage from the B1, which we have been pretty excited about because there’s nothing like that all-electric on the market.

As for a pickup, there’s also still nothing on the market, but there are a lot more efforts to make them.

The Tesla Pickup Truck is under development and other startups, like Rivian Automotive, are working on their own all-electric pickup trucks.

There’s a lot to like from Bollinger Motors, but there’s also no word on the price, which will make or break those vehicles.

What prices do you think would make sense for the B1 and the B2? Let us know in the comment section below.
