Energica’s Ego Sport Black is their newest 150 mph electric motorcycle

Energica took to the 2018 Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany to show off the newest 2019 models of their high power sport bikes. The newest line of Energica electric motorcycles combine impressive speeds and performance with novel tech upgrades that more closely than ever resemble the professional Energica electric motorcycles used for racing.

Energica electric motorcycles

Energica is known as a premium manufacturer of high power electric sport motorcycles.

The Italian electric motorcycle company was recently chosen as the manufacturer for the inaugural MotoE World Cup, sponsored by Enel.

According to Livia Cevolini, the CEO of Energica Motor Company:

“Being chosen as the single manufacturer for the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE World Cup is for us the consecration of our product as an unquestioned point of reference at a global level for the high-performance electric motorcycle sector. It is confirmation of a job well done.”

Energica is currently presenting five motorcycles from their model line at the 2018 Intermot, along with the demo racebike Energica Ego Corsa. This is the electric race bike tested throughout the year at demo laps during the MotoGP Calendar, and it’s this prototype from which the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE World Cup Ego Corsa race bikes will be developed.

Fortunately for fans, consumers can now buy electric sport bikes that are even closer to the models used by the racers.

The company unveiled a number of updates to their 2019 Energica electric motorcycle model line, and the specs are quite stunning.

The most impressive is likely the Energica Ego Sport Black, which more closely resembles the actual racing bikes.

While some of the other Energica electric motorcycle models are limited to 125 mph (200 km/h), the Energica Ego Sport Black reaches a blistering 150 mph (241 km/h). That speed is also an “electronically limited” top speed, meaning it doesn’t struggle to reach those speeds. Rather, you’ll feel the power all the way up to 150 mph.

Speaking of power, it takes a significant amount of it for an electric motorcycle to reach those speeds.

The Energica Ego Sport Black features a 107 kW (145 hp) motor with 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs) of torque. That’s some serious torque. Not the most we’ve ever seen in an electric motorcycle, but it’s up there.

Also, consider that with electric motorcycles, that torque is instantly available immediately from a dead stop.

To better control that much power and torque, Energica has updated their throttle control. It is now much more sensitive. All 2019 Energica electric motorcycles come equipped with an electric throttle that can read adjustments down to 1/100th of a degree.

And to make sure that all of the Energica’s torque and power gets transferred to the ground, the company is introducing new traction control. It is configurable with six levels of intervention that combine the existing eABS and Bosch ABS powerful braking that keeps riders safer.

Other tech upgrades to the 2019 models included heated hand grips and charging upgrades. Cold weather riders will surely appreciate the heated grips addition, especially since it would be a shame to put motorcycle bar end mittens on such an aggressive-looking sport bike.

Charging will become more user-controllable, with the ability to set pre-determined charging cutoffs that can help prolong battery life. A new “silent charging” mode will also be available, which will remove the fan noise that can make charging more annoying in certain situations.

A faster charging setting will also be available that should reduce the charge time on Energica electric motorcycles by 15%.

Energica is a popular brand in Europe, but hasn’t gained as much market share in the US as the local dominant player, Zero Motorcycles.

However, that could be changing with the new 2019 model year lineup. Energica electric motorcycles are sold in US dealerships in California, Florida, Texas and North Carolina.

Next month Energica will be opening a new dealership in New York, so we might be seeing more Energica models on US streets soon.
