Faraday Future unveils first pre-production FF91 ‘ultra-luxury EV’

With the recent cash injection, Faraday Future is moving forward with the production of the FF91 electric vehicle.

The startup has now unveiled the first pre-production FF91 – pictured above – assembled at its factory in Hanford, California.

Until now, FF has been testing a few beta prototype vehicles, but now that they are moving into production, they say that they are building the first pre-production vehicles to test the production process.

The company announced that “Hanford has met internal milestones, getting one key step closer to the first complete production car.”

Yesterday, Faraday Future (FF) hosted “several key team members in a ceremony to celebrate their first pre-production build of the FF 91”, which they are referring to as an “ultra-luxury intelligent EV”.

FF Senior VP of Manufacturing Dag Reckhorn said about the milestone:

“It is inspirational for us at FF to see all the parts come together for this significant day: the literal parts of the FF 91 from our various on-time supplier partners; the processes and tooling within the Hanford facility itself; and the invaluable training for the essential ‘soft’ skills required for this level of sophisticated teamwork I and others need in our Hanford production teams as we begin creation of our FF 91 for demanding users. The worker training program with College of the Sequoias through the California ETP grant is essential.”

FF says that it is now hiring “at a large scale” for the plant and they plan to have over 1,000 workers at the location.

They are now aiming for production during the first half of 2019 – moved from “by the end of 2018.”

Electrek’s Take

I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I think the FF91 looks good.

That said, I couldn’t tell what that car is if you had a gun to my head, which is why I like the “we are creating a new species” tagline. I suppose you could call it a “crossover” but automakers are calling everything a crossover these days.

It’s a big car. We had some comparison shots of a beta prototype next to a Model X last year and they look similar in size. I guess it is a similar form factor as the Jaguar I-Pace – albeit bigger.

The vehicle is expected to have more than decent specs with over 300 miles of range and impressive performance, but the price tag has remained a mystery.

We have heard anything from $120,000 to over $300,000 and now that they are calling it an “ultra-luxury intelligent EV”, I tend to think it’s going to be on the higher end of that range.

I think FF will have a tough time to find buyers at that price, but I’d love for them to prove me wrong.
