Elon Musk recently mentioned that Tesla has made some updates to the Model 3 for ride comfort, including some suspension upgrades, but they also updated the backseat.
Today, we get a first quick look at the upgraded backseat cushions.
The updates came after some complaints about ride comfort.
Tesla addressed it through a slight update to its suspension system and Musk even suggested that owners could simply reduce the pressure inside the tires by about 10% to improve comfort – though that should come with an efficiency hit, which in turn will result in a loss of range.
But when it comes to comfort for rear passengers, Tesla actually updated the backseat in order to make it a smoother ride.
A reader sent us an image of the new Model 3 (VIN 18,XXX) with the updated backseat (on the right) and here it is next to an older version of the seats (VIN 14,XXX) on the left:
As you can see, the cushions for side support are significantly bigger on the new backseat than the original one.
It should make for a more comfortable sitting experience for rear passengers in the Model 3, but we have yet to hear about first-hand experience from owners.
Also, it doesn’t appear to affect the sitting height, which is both good for tall people and for the level of visibility of the driver.
It’s not a big update, but it’s a great example of Tesla’s strategy to continuously implement improvements without having to wait for model year changes like most automakers.
Sometimes, it can have its toll on the production process and it can also be frustrating for customers who want to time their purchase with the latest updates, but it results in a continuously improving vehicle.
Other improvements that Tesla has introduced to the Model 3 after the start of production include the previously mentioned suspension upgrades but also a new windshield as revealed by CEO Elon Musk earlier this week.
Tesla has made the struts and dampers upgrade available as retrofits, but it’s starting to look like the latest Model 3 vehicles coming off the line are starting to be significantly better than the early production version.
