After completing an impressive – and at times bizarre – sale of 50,000 hats, Elon Musk’s Boring Company is now sending out invites to 10 random hat buyers to drive their boring machine and tour their first Los Angeles tunnel.
Guess who won one of the invites?
That’s right, me!
Over the last few months, Musk kept promoting the hat on his Twitter account and half-jokingly saying that it was how he was financing his new startup, which is developing new boring techniques in order to reduce the cost of building tunnels and improve underground transportation systems.
A concept map of the planned Los Angeles tunnel network was unveiled last month.
They actually ended up selling 50,000 hats, which is worth $1 million in sales. Last month, he said that he will invite 10 of those hat buyers for a special event to tour the first section of their tunnel under Los Angeles and even drive the machine:
I shamelessly lobbied for an invite myself – having already bought a Boring Company hat:
But that was clearly not happening so I bought 4 more hats thinking they would make for fun gifts during the holidays and increase my odds to 1/1,000 at the same time.
It turns out that it was actually a good investment since I was randomly chosen with 9 other Boring Company hat buyers to drive their boring machine.
Here’s the email that I received earlier this week:
Congrats! Per Elon’s tweet, you’ve been randomly selected as one of 10 lucky hat aficionados invited to tour The Boring Company’s LA tunnel, drive our boring machine, and attend our Hyperloop Competition weekend this summer!Expect to receive more information in late February as to the specific dates. Note that, if you choose to attend, you will need to cover your own transportation and accommodation costs.Bring some shoes you’re comfortable getting dirty… and your hat, of course.
Of course, I’ll be sure to report back with my experience on Electrek as usual. If there’s anything specific you want me to try to find out about the Boring Company and their machine, let me know in the comment section below.
