Tesla opens Model 3 configurator to reservation holders on the East Coast and Midwest

Tesla’s delivery results and Model 3 production update yesterday were bittersweet for Tesla enthusiasts. On one hand, it’s a significant production increase since issues have plagued the ramp up for months, but on the other hand, Tesla delayed its 5,000 units per week goal by 3 months.

But the production increase is enough to enable Tesla to widen its range of Model 3 deliveries to the East Coast and Midwest.

Electrek has received reports from Model 3 reservation holders in New York, New Jersey, Maryland,  Massachusetts, and Illinois who have received an invite from Tesla to configure and order their Model 3.

Update: More reports are coming in and it looks like Tesla opened up invitations to pretty much every state outside of California.

Until now, Tesla was limiting Model 3 configurations and deliveries to California and to current Tesla owners.

The reports we received from reservation holders so far seem to indicate that invitations are still limited to reservation holders with Tesla owner priority, but the automaker is definitely expanding beyond California.

Tesla delivered 1,770 Model 3’s in 2017 and it had 860 Model 3 vehicles in transit at the end of the year.

But the company says that it now achieved a production rate of “over 1,000 units per week”, which is enabling them to accelerate deliveries to non-employees.

They wrote in a press release today:

“This is why we were not able to deliver many of these cars during the holiday season, just before the quarter ended. Model 3 deliveries to non-employee customers are now accelerating rapidly, and we’re confident our customers will love them.”

Reservation holders who are currently receiving invites to configure on the East Coast are being told that they will receive their Model 3 in 4 weeks.
