It’s a busy week for Tesla’s software team. Its vehicle lineup is growing and it looks like there’s something for every vehicle. After the new ‘Autopilot 2.5’ software update and new convenience features, now Tesla says that it is also updating the Model 3 software with new features.
Like it was the case with Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with Autopilot 2.5 hardware, Model 3’s Autopilot hardware will also need to be recalibrated.
Tesla wrote about the upcoming update in an email to Model 3 owners this week:
“To take advantage of this update, you will need to recalibrate the Autopilot hardware on your vehicle by driving on straight, well-marked roads for a total of 50 miles. Please keep in mind that recalibration time can vary based on road types. After this calibration process, Parallel and Perpendicular Autopark will be newly enabled, and Autopilot will resume normal operation. There is no need for a service visit.”
The automaker says that more features are coming via over-the-air updates. They also recently introduced Homelink and Auto Mirror Tilt with recent updates.
Recent closer looks at the Model 3’s software showed that it’s far from a finished version and it desperately needs a few software updates.
Beyond adapting the Autopilot to the vehicle, it looks like Tesla is still adapting its current Model S and Model X user applications to the Model 3.
Tesla went from a vertical screen (center touchscreen) and a horizontal screen (instrument cluster) in Model S and Model X to a single horizontal screen in Model 3.

While it might not seem like much, adapting all the different software applications to the different screens is actually a great task.
Hopefully for Model 3 reservation holders, the system will more complete by the time deliveries start for regular customers. Though like Tesla’s other vehicles, further updates are expected over time as Tesla improves on its software features.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently reiterated that they are still in “production hell”, but he is nonetheless confident that the production rate will significantly increase throughout the current quarter and Tesla maintains the target for deliveries to customers later this month.
In the meantime, Tesla is continuing to deliver Model 3 vehicles to employees, family members of employees, and company insiders who actually help Tesla work through its early production hurdles.
As we recently reported, aside from the software, Tesla had to replace Model 3 headlights, battery, seats, and more while going through ‘production hell’.
