Just as Volkswagen announced its updated electrification plans with a massive new $84 billion investment in electric cars and batteries, the German automaker also unveiled a new electric vehicle concept.
The vehicle is called I.D. CROZZ and VW presents it as “a crossover of an SUV and a four-door coupé.”
VW’s series of “I.D.” concept vehicles are expected to serve as the basis of a series of production cars built on VW’s new electric platform.
There’s the I.D., which is a Golf-size vehicle expected to be their first mass market EV in 2019, there’s the crossover all-electric I.D. CROSS Concept, and there’s I.D. BUZZ electric microbus coming in 2022.
Now the ‘I.D.CROZZ’ is being added to the lineup for 2020, according to the automaker.
VW describes the vehicle:
“The I.D. CROZZ is a sporty, zero-emission all-round vehicle that is designed to be interactive, and whose electric 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is as impressive on unpaved trails as it is in adverse weather conditions. One electric motor works at the front axle and one at the rear, and torque distribution is controlled via an ‘electric propshaft’. The driving range of the SUV that outputs 225 kW (system power) and boasts a top speed of 180 km/h is up to 500 kilometres (NEDC) on one battery charge. The high-performance battery can be charged to 80% of its energy capacity in 30 minutes using a fast-charging system.”
Of course, 500 km NEDC-rated generally results in about 400 km EPA-rated (250 miles), or closer to real-world usage.

Like the other I.D. concepts before it, VW says that the CROZZ features the same ‘all-electric architecture’ that was developed as a common platform and the car will feature the capacity for “fast software updates and upgrades.”
Electrek’s Take
While it’s yet another electric concept car for VW and little to nothing in production, the recent commitment to invest $84 billion in electric cars and batteries gives weight to those electric concepts.
As for the new concept itself, the specs are interesting, but they are interesting for an electric vehicle coming out this year. For something coming in 2020, it doesn’t mean much considering the rate of improvements in electric vehicles over the last few years.
And for the design, oversized wheels aside, it looks good and refreshing to see no fake grill for an EV.
I might be seeing some resemblance with the lines of Tesla’s Model X, especially with the front-end, but the vehicle is still an early prototype and could change by the time it hits production.
