A Tesla Model S wagon prototype is in development by a third-party

We already have seen several Tesla Model S wagon renderings that were well-received, but now a company is actually developing a prototype that could turn into a small series production.

Wagons, or estate cars, are very popular in Europe, especially in markets like the UK and Germany, but there’s none with an all-electric powertrain.

As it turns out, the Model S’ design translates well into a sport wagon.

In the latest Fully Charged (embedded), Jonny announced that a Model S owner in the UK complained that his dogs don’t fit in the back of his car so he commissioned automotive engineers in Norfolk to turn it into a wagon.

The former Jaguar, Lotus, and McLaren engineers have already created a model of the Model S with a wagon back and built a mold to manufacture it:

By making the back in composite, they expect that the finished product could actually be lighter than the standard Model S.

They now have the car at the shop and they started cutting it, according to Fully Charged.

The prototype should be ready by the end of the year and depending on how it is received, they could offer the modification as an option in low volume production to Model S owners.

They discuss the project in the latest episode of Fully Charged:

Tesla is currently betting on SUVs and it doesn’t have any official plan to make station wagons right now. So that’s probably the best we got for now.

Though there might be another option. If you really want a bigger back in your Model S, you can ask the guys who actually turned their Model S into a hearse:

Not as sleek as the back of an actual sports wagon, but I would argue that it does the job.

Another independent designer also envisioned a Tesla Model 3 station wagon, which could also prove popular and make the trunk opening bigger – something that some people found to be a problem.
