When Faraday Future first unveiled the all-electric FF91, it was believed to be a competitor to the Tesla Model S. They even put it against Tesla’s performance sedan in drag races.
But due to its size, the all-electric vehicle could actually be closer to Tesla’s Model X. A rare look at the two vehicles side-by-side gives us a new point of comparison.
While the FF91 is most often referred to as a sedan due to its shape, it stands tall and it’s large enough that it could easily be a crossover or SUV.
Eric A. Iwasaki from Los Angeles brought his Tesla Model X to his local Coffee and Cars last weekend and surprisingly found a rare FF91 beta prototype.
It is quite strange for an automaker to bring a beta prototype to a small event like a Coffee and Cars, but it gave Iwasaki a unique opportunity to get shots of the two all-electric vehicles side-by-side. The result is quite impressive (picture credits: Eric A. Iwasaki):
As you can see, the vehicles look about the same size, but the FF91 is significantly longer at 206.7” versus the Model X’s 198.3″.
They both have the same width (89″) and the Model X is barely taller at 65″ versus FF91’s 62″.
While the FF91 was often referred to in the media as a ” Tesla Model S killer”, it looks like it could actually be closer to a “Model X killer”. Of course, you need to first get into production in order to even compete and Faraday Future has been stalling on that front.
They are still trying to raise money to build their factory in Nevada and with their main backer, Jia Yueting, having financial troubles, they are having difficulties coming up with the funds and the project has been at a standstill.
Nonetheless, they have built a pretty impressive vehicle that can compete with even the top performance version of the Model X.
With a 130kWh battery pack configuration, it will have 1050 horsepower, which Faraday Future claims is the most of any electric car (but actually falls short of the Rimac Concept_One by 38hp) and 378 miles of EPA range. It recently set a new “production” EV record at Pike’s Peak – beating last year’s Tesla P90D by 20+ seconds.
In comparison, the Tesla Model X P100D is equipped with 100 kWh battery pack, its powertrain is rated at 760 hp, and it enables 289 mi (465 km) of range on a single charge. Unfortunately, it’s not worth comparing prices since Faraday Future has yet to confirm any for the FF91 – though it is expected to be similar in price or more expensive than the Model X P100D, which starts $148,000.
