Electrek green energy brief: Turkey tax on Chinese solar, Chilean solar world’s best, more

Turkey to tax Chinese panels by size for price dumping violation – $20-25/m2 – comes out to be about $.10-.13/W. About ~$30 per solar panel. Interesting that Turkey just passed this ruling after a major solar panel manufacturer said they’d build a factory in the country in order to supply solar panels to a 1GW solar project.

The sun is so intense and the air so dry that seemingly nothing survives – Chile – ‘A solar Saudi Arabia’: The high mountain plains of northern Chile are some of the best solar resources on the planet. The workers must be in suits for protection. Sunlight is almost twice as intense as the Sunshine State of Florida. The list of greatest sunlight includes – The Sahara, Gobi Desert, Middle East, Northern Mexico/SE USA, Chile, north Australia and northern India.

It is a US Supreme Court ruling that CO2 is a pollutant to be regulated by the EPAIn Massachusetts v. EPA, the court ruled on April 2, 2007, that the agency had the authority — and the duty, consistent with scientific evidence — to regulate greenhouse gas emissions – The EPA has a legal obligation to manage CO2 emissions. Lawsuits, like this regarding energy efficiency rules, will be what the Trump administration is known for if they simply ignore reality.

Singulus, specialist PV manufacturing equipment supplier, expects to double sales in 2017 as order backlog increased over 300%Company also noted that it expected further orders for its crystalline silicon wet-chemical equipment (Silex II) for N-type mono heterojunction (HJ) solar cells – Heterjunction cells, cool to see them in the manufacturing pipeline. R&D money was spent to further CIGS and HJ technology development as well as P-type PERC (Passivate Emitter Rear Cell) technology. The makers of the machines drive what will be installed on our homes. Great example from a large manufacturer – Yingli – moving into new technology.

South Australia swamped with 90 battery proposals – After Elon Musk got into a high profile conversation with the Australia PM, battery manufacturers took aim at the $100M+ opportunity. Included in these proposals is one that made headlines – a 330MW+100MW solar+storage project. Lyon Group (with AES): Says it is proposing to build one 330MW solar farm with 100MW/400MWh battery storage in Riverland area, and another 120MW solar farm with 100MW/200MWh battery storage near Roxby Downs. Insists projects will go ahead regardless of outcome of tender. That’s a lot of volume paired together – the 100MW plant would be the largest battery storage project in the world.

FPL of Florida to develop 1.5GW of solar over next 7 years – California installed 5GW last year. Florida is hoping to install, per year, what California installs every 20 days or so. Florida is about 20 million people, California 38 million. Monopoly failure in the Sunshine State.

Great chart – that yellow chink is going to get bigger. The Red at the top of the chart is an opportunity we must figure out – cutailment
