Tesla deliveries surge by 150% in Germany as local presence increases

Tesla delivered a record number of vehicles during the first quarter of 2017 and while the company doesn’t break down the deliveries per region, we are starting to get an idea of which markets helped achieve the result with registration numbers.

Germany was a great contributor with a 157% increase in deliveries year-over-year during the first quarter.

After a slow start in Germany for the first 3 years of presence in the country, Tesla started making progress in this difficult market dominated by local manufacturers last year and the progress is continuing in 2017.

The results of the first quarter are interesting because it would be easy to think that the increase could be entirely attributed to new Model X deliveries, but Model S deliveries are still growing in the country.

Based on registration data, Tesla delivered a record of 1,023 vehicles in Germany: 675 Model S sedans and 348 Model X SUVs. It compares to 396 vehicles, all Model S, during the same period in 2016.

They also managed a significant quarter-to-quarter increase even though the Model X was available in the country during the last 3 quarters.

While the Model X is definitely contributing to the increase, it’s clear that the Model S is still strong. Here’s are the deliveries based on registration data over the last 3 years:

Last May, the German government launched a €4,000 incentive for electric vehicles, which helped general EV sales, but not so much for Tesla.

Tesla claimed that they were purposely left out of the program because of a cap for vehicles with a starting price of less than 60,000 € negotiated by the government and the German auto industry.

They later unbundled a bunch of basic options on the Model S to bring the starting price down and get access to the EV incentives .

The German government aims for the program to add 300,000 EVs on its roads by 2019. Local German automakers are expected to contribute to that goal in greater numbers next year when a new wave of new all-electric German premium vehicles, like Audi’s e-tron quattro and the Mercedes EQ Generation, should hit the market.

In the meantime, Tesla has announced large investments in the country – especially through its ‘Tesla Advanced Automation Germany’ group born out of the acquisition of Grohmann Engineering. The growing presence in the country is certainly helping the increase in sales.
