Before Tesla acquired SolarCity, both companies were starting to work with home builders to incorporate their products directly in new homes. Since the acquisition, they joined their efforts to include battery packs and solar panels in new constructions.
Now we learn that a home builder decided to make the Tesla Powerwall 2 standard in every new home they build.
While Tesla Energy is currently being talked about in Australia mostly because of a bid to quickly install utility-scale energy storage to fix the country’s energy problems, but the arrival of its residential option, the Powerwall, is now becoming the focus.
We learned that Powerwall 2 installations are being scheduled this month in Australia and Arden Homes, a Melbourne-based home builder, timed it with the announcement that they are making the Powerwall 2 a standard feature in their homes. Installations are also expected to ramp up in the US in April.
They partnered with solar installer and certified Tesla Powerwall reseller Bradford Solar:
“Arden Homes is committed to building at the highest standard of energy efficiency and is now proud to offer the Bradford Solar ChargePack including Tesla Powerwall as a standard inclusion in every Arden home.”
It’s likely to become a more common offering going forward.
Kirk Hammersmith is leading the effort at Tesla as Manager of Builder Sales for New Homes. He held a similar position at SolarCity before the acquisition and at Paramount Solar before that.
The effort could prove more popular in Australia, which has the world’s highest per capita penetration of rooftop solar with 15% of households using solar for a total of 1.5 million households across the country. Almost every new home is offered with a solar option since it reduces the installation cost and makes it even more economical.
Same goes for the Powerwall 2, which helps take advantage of Australia’s already advantageous net metering – again due to the current energy crisis – especially in South Australia.
Here’s Arden Homes’ new brochure about the inclusion of the Powerwall 2:
