California’s record breaking battery banks drive doubling of energy storage in US 2016 – And the chart seems to predict a tripling of that volume in 2017 to 1GWh. 300% growth in 2017 is going to make a lot of manufacturers step their game up. Wonder what percentage of that 1GW Tesla will be delivering? We know Samsung SDI is also big.
Rhode Island going for 1GW by 2020 – While 1GW of renewables for a lot of places isn’t that great (remember there are single projects larger than 1GW popping up these days). 1GW for a state that takes 45 minutes to drive across is something to consider – not to mention that to get to 1GW by 2020 it will involve growing almost 10x from today’s deployed volume in less than 4 years. I work in Rhode Island on a regular basis – got a sales call there today. The businesses and private people are interested – paying $0.16/kWh with healthy demand fees adds up quickly.
Solar panels at ¢25-26/W by the end of the year – If the volume of manufacturing keeps increasing, but the global demand stays flat in 2017 (expected to happen) – something will have to change. This aggressive pricing driven by the Chinese will give Indian manufacturers another year of hell. Chinese panels are ¢10/W cheaper than Indian.
Advanced Energy revenue grew by 1%, while expanding certain volumes deployed immensely – The real story behind the headline: immense growth in certain areas was masked by their immense price falls. Solar power almost doubled in deployment volume – revenue generated grew by 30%. Wind power increased about 10% – yet saw revenue about stay flat. Being in the field selling, it doesn’t hurt me yet. I am sure manufacturers that are selling to me though, in fact – I know they’re feeling it in their long term balance sheets. Dynamics.
Global warming ideas (though not the term ‘greenhouse effect’) from 1824 and Joseph Fourier – Brought to my attention by QZ, this research pushes back the concepts of global warming based upon the gasses in the atmosphere to a time before electricity, before space satellites and before we figured out that we could use this science to manipulate the population. Apparently, Fourier is often given credit for the term ‘greenhouse effect’ but it seems the term wasn’t used regarding climate until the very early 1900s. A good summary of Fourier’s thoughts. I know Australia has some of the world’s higher energy costs for a developed nation, and has some good sunshine for solar power. A population of 23 million people that happen to have some of the highest residential solar penetrations in the world is ripe for a home energy storage take over.
