Tesla gets Guinness World Record for a massive Model S and X parade in China

While Tesla only started delivering the Model X in China in June of last year, the all-electric SUV is reportedly already popular in the country. It was even going for a 40% premium ($240k US) on the Chinese gray market and it helped Tesla increase its deliveries in the country to reportedly around 10,000 units in total (S and X).

Some of the first owners gathered in order to set a new Guinness World Record.

Model S and X owners went to the Beijing Golden Port car park to create the new record earlier this week.

Over hundred Tesla Model X SUVs and 145 Model S sedan lined up for what was described as a “spectacular parade ceremony” with a representative of the Guinness Book of World Records as a witness.

They gave a plaque to the company:

“The largest parade of Tesla cars was achieved by Tesla Motors (China) in Beijing, China on 15 January 2017.”

The Model Xs also simultaneously performed the Christmas light show easter egg that Tesla released last month through a software update.

Tesla shared a few pictures on its Chinese social media accounts:

Automakers are increasingly focusing on China for growth and even more so for electric vehicle growth.

The country has the ambitious goal to have 5 million EVs on the road by 2020 in order to achieve its target to reduce carbon emissions. China is aggressively pushing for electric vehicle adoption and it plans on introducing more competition at the manufacturing level by relaxing its joint-venture laws, which could enable Tesla to more easily establish local manufacturing for domestic demand instead of importing vehicles like it does now.

China more than doubled its fleet of electric vehicles last year to now over 600,000 cars – more than the US or all European countries combined.
