Lamborghini will make an electric plug-in version of its Urus SUV concept

Lamborghini’s Urus SUV concept has been long in the making. The Italian automaker first unveiled it in 2012 and it has since displayed several iterations at motor shows. The company says that it plans to bring it to market in 2018 as its first SUV and surprisingly, company officials have now confirmed that an electric plug-in version will be offered.

It means that the Urus concept will not only Lamborghini’s first SUV, but also its first electric vehicle -albeit not 100% electric.

Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s head of research and development, confirmed the news to Autocar this week.

Unfortunately, he didn’t reveal any details about the electric hybrid powertrain that they plan to use for the vehicle.

As for the SUV itself, Lamborghini being a part of the Volkswagen group, they are using the same platform used by other VW brands like Audi’s Q7, the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg.

The company built a new chassis on the platform and it’s definitely a looker:

While the Urus will be Lamborghini’s first plug-in hybrid, the automaker is also reportedly working on its first all-electric vehicle. It will be closer to home since we are talking about a supercar. Reports coming from Germany suggest that the Italian sportscar manufacturer launched an electric supercar program called ‘Vitola’ using the all-electric Mission E platform from Porsche.

It’s all part of VW’s plan to build 2 to 3 million all-electric cars a year and to unveil 30 new models by 2025 – across all its brands.
