Tesla starts construction on new coast-to-coast Supercharger route

Tesla wasn’t among the companies participating in the White House’s new initiative to create nationwide corridors with charging stations for electric vehicles announced earlier this week. But just as it was announced, Tesla started construction on its own new Supercharging coast-to-coast corridor.

Tesla’s Supercharger network already offers a few routes to travel coast-to-coast, but with the start of construction on 3 new stations, the electric automaker will offer yet another alternative to its owners while also expanding its network in Nebraska.

Supercharge.info, a website tracking new Tesla Supercharger sites, updated its map this week to add 3 more locations under construction on the Interstate-80 in Nebraska: Lincoln, Gothenburg, and Ogallala.

The new fast-charging stations will also be the first Superchargers in the state.

Tesla applied for the permits back in August, but construction work started only this week, according to reports from locals.

It looks like the Supercharger in Gothenburg will have 6 stalls, Ogallala will have 7, and the one in Lincoln will be equipped with 8 stalls.

The new chargers will also significantly increase the presence of Tesla’s Supercharger network in the American midwest.

At the unveiling of the Model 3 earlier this year and in preparation for its market introduction, Tesla announced that it plans to double the number of Superchargers to 7,000 units and quadruple the number of Destination chargers to 15,000 units by the end of 2017.

So far this year, Tesla added 156 new locations and now has a total of more than 4,600 Supercharger stalls. Superchargers are currently under construction at 32 new locations, according to Supercharge.info.

It’s also interesting to see Tesla building Superchargers with more stalls per location ahead of the Model 3 introduction. For example, earlier this year, Tesla opened its first 20-stall Supercharger station.
