Tesla Model X’s Falcon Wing doors are significantly faster after v8.0 software update

Tesla started pushing its latest update, version 8.0, last month in the US and last week in Europe and Canada. The update introduced significant improvements to the Autopilot and a complete UI overhaul as we previously discussed, but it also introduced some a less-known but welcomed improvements to the Falcon Wing doors.

The update was pushed to both Model S and Model X, but there were some vehicle specific improvements like one to the Falcon Wing doors, which now open and close much faster.

It might seem trivial, but it was actually a complaint among some owners because it took some time for the system to lift those big heavy doors. It’s mostly just a small inconvenience, but it can also be an issue if you are trying to get out quickly – like when BMW CEO Harald Kruger bonk his head on the door trying to rush out of a Model X after being spotted in it at a car show.

Norwegian Tesla Model X owner Bjorn Nyland recently got the v8.0 update and tested the door opening and closing process against the v7.1.

Here’s the result:

We are talking about the opening time reduced by 22% (6.6 to 5.1 seconds) and 26% faster closing time (8.4 to 6.2 seconds). Not bad for an over-the-air software update.

As previously reported, it was difficult for Tesla to complete the design of the Falcon Wing doors after dropping a hydraulic system designed by a supplier and building its own electromechanical door system to replace it. Tesla recently settled a lawsuit against the supplier.
