Hyperloop One inks a deal for potential first ‘Hyperloop cargo offloader’ in Dubai’s port

Dubai is continuously showing interest in hyperloop systems and today, they interest manifested by inking a deal between Hyperloop One, the main company developing a hyperloop system, and DP World, one of the world’s biggest marine port operator, in order to evaluate and develop a potential ‘Hyperloop cargo offloader’ at Dubai’s Port of Jebel Ali.

The concept (pictured above) is fairly simple: create a hyperloop system between a marine port and what would become an inland container port in order to free up valuable portside real estate and reduce cargo traffic in the region.

Dubai’s Port of Jebel Ali is one of the busiest in the world. It handles 18 million TEUs (20-foot-long containers) every year and they are looking to increase that volume.

Rob Lloyd, CEO of Hyperloop One, is confident the company can help:

“We believe we can increase the volume of freight DP World moves through the port, which supports more revenue and profit for all stakeholders,”

The partnership will conduct a feasibility study to investigate the business case, route options and cost to build and operate the system.

The development is particularly important for Hyperloop One since DP World operates 77 marine and inland terminals on six continents. If they can make their case for a hyperloop system in the Port of Jebel Ali, it could open the doors for a bigger partnership between the companies and similar concepts could find their way in other important port cities.
