Tesla removes last reason to go to gas station (squeegee), working to offer car wash service at Superchargers

If you own an all-electric vehicle, you are probably happy to have cut visits to the gas station out of your weekly routine, but there’s one thing other than refueling that gas stations are useful for – cleaning your windshield and windows. I haven’t seen many charging stations equipped with a squeegee.

Although not exactly a squeegee, Tesla is now looking into a fix to keep its growing fleet of vehicles clean by introducing a new car wash service for Tesla owners. A pilot project is already underway in Fremont.

Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla is looking into a potential partnership with Eco Green Auto Clean, a car wash company with a process using less than a cup of water to clean one car.

After all, water is an important resource and especially since California, where Tesla has a large fleet, is still in a record-breaking drought. It’s difficult to justify using water to clean your vehicle.

Eco Green Auto Clean uses microfiber towels, a biodegradable auto wash spray and about a cup of water per vehicle. The company claims that the process is environmentally friendly and “designed to lift and dissolve dirt on contact”.

Tesla is currently testing the company’s service with employees at its Fremont Factory Supercharger:

If the automaker finds the service to be satisfactory, it might launch it at other Superchargers.

They are reportedly in the early stages of developing the program, so it’s not set in stone, but our sources say that it would be a subscription base service. Prices being discussed right now are ~$80 a month for the Model S and eventually the for the Model 3.

It would be a little more expensive for the Model X – we are talking about ~$90. For that price, you will be able to have your Tesla hand washed twice a month. It’s not exactly cheap, but we are not talking about an automatic wash service.

We reached out to Tesla for a comment on the service, but a spokesperson said that they have nothing to share about it at this point.

The company already offers similar services at company offices, like Google’s, but it would be interesting to see the service deployed at charging locations.

Eco Green Auto Clean shared a video demonstration of its technique to clean a car with less than a cup of water:

What do you think? Would you use the service?
