The Super 73 Electric Bike has an old-school design and hits speeds up to 30mph

We’re not just talking about electric bikes as a “one day” or “down-the-road” solution any more. With smaller batteries and greater range, what once was a dream is now a feasible reality. The latest alternative fuel creation comes way of Lithium Cycles, a group out of South California that has eyes on bringing a retro-style battery-powered bike to the masses. So far, interest is heavy. The Super 73 Electric Bicycle has already raised over $165,000 in just a few days on Kickstarter…

Lithium Cycles is touting its new creation as an affordable go-anywhere bicycle with impressive range. The designers behind this release are leaning on a throwback design as a starting point. It definitely says 80’s more than Tesla. Although, there is nothing here that isn’t needed. This allows the cost to stay lower and the battery to perform at a higher level thanks to a lightweight design.

The Super 73 is powered by a 1,000 watt motor that pushes speeds up to 30mph. A built-in battery recharges in four hours – using a standard outlet – and provides around 20 miles of range. One beauty of this arrangement is that a drivers license is not required to operate this bicycle. Given that it has limited speeds, this could be a very attractive option for parents of high schoolers in lieu of a vehicle.

Lithium uses a scratch-resistant steel frame that is powder coated. This is a little disappointing to not see aluminum used here but we’re guessing cost vs. return didn’t warrant this move. There is a built-in throttle on the handlebars that controls speeds. You’ll also find a few different buttons there for changing ride modes, etc.

While the stats above are limited to full-on battery power, riders can also opt for a manual mode or a powered assist setting that provides help well past twenty miles of travel. There are five levels in this mode depending on your needs. A built-in LCD display communicates key information such as remaining battery life, distance traveled, speeds and more. Additional features include a USB charging port for your devices, a keyed entry system with removable battery and a cup holder.

At this time, all of the early bird purchase options have been claimed over at Kickstarter. For $1,899, you can reserve your bike and pick it up in Southern California. For a few dollars more, Lithium will ship it to select countries. Both options are slated to deliver in October.
