Volvo unveils two stunning new electric vehicle concepts with over 200 miles of range

Swedish automaker Volvo unveiled today two new concepts based on its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). The new platform was developed to support all-electric and hybrid powertrains. The battery-powered version of the concepts are expected to achieve around 215 miles on a single charge.

The designs of the two new concepts are stunning and refreshing after what we have been seeing with EV concepts lately.

The electric versions of the new concepts are part of Volvo’s plan to have sold a total of “up to 1 million electrified cars by 2025 globally”.

They will be part of the 40 Series and for now, they are named 40.1 for the SUV and 40.2 for the sedan.

Volvo decided to use a modular approach with its CMA platform in hope to accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles into its lineup. Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo, on the announcement:

“By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment. Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.”

The company says that the first 40 Series vehicles will go into production as soon as next year, but it’s not clear if that will include the all-electric variants. In the meantime, the concepts are worth taking a look:
