Nissan is leveraging its self-driving car technology to create the office chair of the future [Video]

Nissan released this week a video of an intelligent “self-parking” chair concept leveraging its own self-driving car technology. The short video is worth a watch.

Like almost every other car manufacturer, Nissan is heavily investing in self-driving technologies and aims at releasing a commercial version around 2020, which puts them in the middle of the pack.

Last year, the company unveiled the IDS self-driving concept which differentiate itself from other showcased technologies by highlighting the possibility of switching from manual to self-driving mode easily. Self-driving mode, which Nissan calls ‘Piloted Drive’, will even imitate the driver’s own style of driving and preferences.

The Japanese automaker is also gradually introducing driver assist features to its new vehicles, which will ultimately lead to fully autonomous driving.

In the meantime, the company is leveraging its technology for other design and engineering projects, such as this one with “intelligent office chairs”. It’s undoubtedly an interesting engineering challenge, but as an office chair, it seems to solve a nonexistent problem. It’s reminiscent of the way humans were moving around in Pixar’s award-winning dystopian film Wall-E.

The tech could be more useful in a wheelchair for people with disabilities. Anyway the video is worth a watch:
