New US budget deal includes retroactive tax credits for electric motorcycles purchased in 2015 and going forward in 2016

The new budget bill approved by the US Congress last week included an important extension to the 30% investment tax credit (ITC) for solar, but it also brought back the less popular (but welcomed) tax credits for electric motorcycles.

The federal tax credit applies to 2-3 wheeled plug-in vehicles and covers 10 percent of the purchase price, up to $2,500 maximum, and applies only to vehicles capable of over 45 mph and with a 4 kilowatt-hour or larger battery pack.

The requirements should apply to Zero Motorcycles’ lineup or Alta Motors’ new Redshift for example.

Interestingly, the tax credits are retroactive and apply to electric motorcycles purchased in 2015. If you bought an electric motorcycle during the past year, you should verify if you are eligible to the tax credit and contact your dealership to obtain more information.
