Lit Motors says it’s making progress on its electric self-balancing motorcycle, but still no timeline to production

In his latest letter to the Lit Motors community, CEO Daniel Kim, who recently suffered from a severe motorcycle accident and is now recovering from a hip replacement, says the company is making progress on its electric self-balancing motorcycle, but they are still not ready to offer a timeline to production.

Kim wrote in the letter:

“We have made some great development in the balance control for the AEV and have created a novel approach to our stability. We are starting to re-think the dynamics of the AEV for a more robust controller, including driving conditions like lateral slip and recovery.”

Lit Motors says that over 1,000 people reserved its auto-balancing electric vehicle (AEV), but those people have yet to receive a production or delivery timeline and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be for anytime soon:

“The AEV’s development timeline and delivery date are dependent on several factors: engineering development & testing, design freeze, supply chain, assembly line development, and financing.”

Even though its road to production is murky, Lit’s prototype is nonetheless very impressive. The self-balancing feature is powered by Lit Motors’ own patented gyroscopic stability system, which aims at making the AEV legally drivable with a regular driving license.

The company is starting to re-think some of the systems of the AEV with a focus on safety, which Lit Motors says it plans to test in 2016.

Kim hopes to be back to work full-time starting in January and to get to work at a “blistering pace”.
