Peugeot announces a new EV concept with a potential range of 280 miles: the FRACTAL

France-based automaker Peugeot announced a new electric vehicle concept: the Fractal. The vehicle is only an early concept and the specifications should be taken with a grain of salt. Early renderings show an interesting design for the small 2-door coupé which the company aims at making very light, weighting in at only 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs).

The company claims it could achieve a range of 280 miles (450 km) on a planned battery pack capacity of only 30 KWh. This claim is highly improbable even if the range is calculated based on European driving cycle, which allows for longer advertised range than EPA standards. For comparison, the 2016 Nissan LEAF will have a 30 KWh battery pack and its range is expected to be around 110 miles.

To help achieve such a long-range, the company is developing a dual motor all-wheel-drive technology which could improve the overall efficiency:

Tesla uses a dual motor all-wheel-drive technology for the Model S and the upcoming Model X. The dual motor Model S achieves a ~5% better range than the rear wheel drive version. A similar tech could help the FRACTAL achieve a longer range, but the 280 miles goal still appear unrealistic.

The FRACTAL is designed with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit concept for the interior which focuses on acoustic performance:

If this vehicle makes it to market, it would be one of the rare EV entry for the French automaker currently selling the Peugeot iOn, which is only a rebranded Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
