Tesla Motors partners with a real estate developer in Hong Kong to install 19 new charging stations

Tesla is having perception issues in regard to charging their cars in Asia. Today, to further develop their charging networks in the region, they announced a partnership with Hang Lung Properties, a Hong Kong based real estate developer, in order to install destination chargers at six shopping malls in mainland China.

Tesla operates two different types of charging networks, the “Superchargers” and “Destination Charging“. Supercharger stations can charge a Model S at a rate of more than 300 miles of range per hour and they are mainly located next to popular routes to facilitate road trips.

“Destination Charging” is meant for Model S owners to charge their car for a longer period of time, sometime overnight, once they arrived at their destination, hence the name of the program.

The chargers that Tesla will install at Hang Lung’s shopping malls will be part of the Destination Charging network.

Here’s the current state of Tesla’s Destination Charging in Asia:

Tesla partners with hotels, restaurants and similar locations to install these chargers for free as long as they remain free to use for Model S owners. The propriety owners have to pay for the electricity, but they get an interesting plus-value offer to attract wealthy Model S owners.

The hardware Tesla uses for the network is the $750 Tesla Wall Connector. When paired with a Model S equipped with dual chargers, it can charge the car at a rate of 58 miles of range per hour.

Beyond the partnership to install these chargers, Hang Lung and Tesla will also launch a series of exhibitions at the 6 malls to promote the use of electric vehicles and showcase Tesla’s latest technology.

Norman Chan, Director Leasing & Sales of Hang Lung Properties, said about the announcement: ““The electric vehicle is the future trend of a sustainable transportation sector. The fact that the Tesla has zero emissions means that it can significantly reduce roadside pollution and thus improve the overall air quality. This is important to Hang Lung Properties which has always recognized the importance of corporate social responsibility and hence strives to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of our business operations.”
