Interesting video illustrates what a modern electric grid should look like; combining grid, solar and energy storage

SolarEdge, an Israel based inverter manufacturer, released a very interesting video of a 24 hour time-lapse of the energy management system of a house connected to the grid, a solar panels installation and a battery pack.

SolarEdge is one of the two manufacturers of inverters compatible with the Tesla Powerwall; the electric vehicle company’s new line of home energy storage products. SolarEdge confirmed that by the end of the year, anyone with a solar installation using a SolarEdge inverter will be able to retrofit their installation to include one or more Tesla Powerwalls. The company will focus on European markets for the daily cycling version and on the US market for the weekly cycling version.

Tesla offers 2 different versions of the Powerwall battery system. The daily cycling version is a 7 KWh battery pack built to be discharged daily in order to take advantage of a solar power installation or to manage usage, especially if you are paying your electric utility by time-of-use. At current price of $3,000, this system will only be advantageous where electricity is very expensive and where time-of-use rates offer a deep discount during low usage hours. This version could also be combined with multiple packs in order to take a solar installation completely off-grid.

The other version is a 10 KWh pack meant to be use as a backup power system. Ideally, it should only be use in case of power outages, but the battery pack is built to withstand weekly cycles for over 10 years.

The video illustrates the potential of combining a smart grid with a solar installation and an energy storage system, like Tesla’s daily cycling Powerwall:
