Tesla’s global fleet reaches 3.5 billion electric miles – added 500 million in less than 3 months

Back in October, we reported on Tesla reaching the 3 billion electric mile milestone and now the company’s global fleet has managed to add 500 million in less than 3 months – bringing the total to 3.5 billion. The company has been keeping track of its fleet mileage with a counter on the ‘Electric Road Trip‘ webpage.

Tesla’s fleet reached its first billion in June 2015 or about 3 years after the Model S was on the road for the first time.

The second billion miles were reached earlier this year in April 2016, less than a year after the first billion.

As previously mentioned, the company reached 3 billion in October 2016, 6 months after the last billion.

Now the company has reached 3.5 billion on Christmas day – less than 3 months after the 3 billion mark as the progression is accelerating thanks to a growing fleet that will soon reach 200,000 vehicles.

Tesla CTO JB Straubel recently highlighted how quickly the company is adding electric miles by comparing the Roadster fleet with the Model S/X fleet:

A similar situation is expected to happen with the Model 3, which should eclipse the Model S/X fleet.

While it took 3 years for Tesla to bring the Model S production rate to 50,000 per year, the company is aiming to bring the Model 3 production rate to ~400,000 within a year after the start of production. Of course, Tesla will need to execute on that, but if successful, we will see a third chart added to the 2 slides above showing a similar comparison with the Model 3 mileage against the Model S.

As Tesla is adding electric miles, it is also adding Autopilot data whether the system is active or not. In November, Tesla had accumulated over 1.3 billion miles for Autopilot data. It’s safe to assume that the number is now over 1.5 billion and the company will now start adding more data per mile with its new fleet of vehicles equipped with Autopilot 2.0 hardware and 360-degree camera coverage.
