Late last night, a Tesla Model S was involved in an serious frontal accident with BMW in a tunnel in Switzerland. Unfortunately, the BMW driver was injured and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance – though 20 minuten (German) reports that his injuries were minor.

Impressively, the Tesla Model S driver reportedly walked away from the accident uninjured, despite the severity of the crash as evidenced by the pictures of the aftermath below.

The circumstances of the accident are currently unclear, but undergoing construction in the Gubrist Tunnel restricting the number of lanes could have been at play in the crash.

Here’s the Model S and the BMW after the accident (pictures Reader Reporter/ Autohilfe Limmattal via 20 minuten):

The Tesla Model S achieved a 5-star frontal crash rating with NHTSA thanks in part to its exceptionally large crumple zone in the front. Due to its lack of engine of engine in the front (though dual motor Teslas have a small about a foot in diameter motor in the front), it creates a large zone to absorb the impact without pushing an engine inside the passenger compartment.

Here’s a video of NHTSA’s frontal crash test of the Model S:
