Tesla started deliveries of the Model X in China just in time for the end of quarter

Reports are coming out that Tesla is starting Model X deliveries in China ahead of schedule. The first shipment of Model X’s reportedly cleared customs and delivery centers now have the electric SUV. They can start delivering to early reservation holders who have been waiting for years in some cases.

While Tesla is indeed ahead of its original schedule for delivery in China, the automaker has been guiding “the second quarter” as the start of Model X deliveries in the country for the past 5 months – when Tesla announced a special edition vehicle for the Chinese New Year.

By starting deliveries now, Tesla is right on time for the end of Q2. The automaker also started delivering the Model X in Europe in the past week and in Canada during the week before that.

With Canada, Europe, and now China, the new markets for the Model X are arriving just in time for the SUV to contribute to Tesla ‘s delivery goal of 17,000 vehicles for the quarter.

Yesterday, Tesla shared the following video of the Model X debut in China, but that event is from two months ago. The automaker is just sharing it as deliveries are starting in the country:

There are reasons to believe the Model X could become a popular vehicle in China, where there are significant health risks due to air pollution, which could make the Model X’s unconventional air filter an important asset for the vehicle’s success in the country. It is about 10 times larger than average car air filtering system and during the unveiling of the vehicle, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed it is “several hundreds time” better at filtering particles than a conventional system.

He even compared the level of air quality in the car to an operating room. At max capacity, the system can detect any viruses or spores – making it bioweapon/apocalypse proof, complete with a “biodefence mode button”, which could be useful even when just sitting in Beijing traffic.

Based on a tally, there are over 2,600 Model X reservations in mainland China and more than 700 in Hong Kong. The reservation holders who converted their reservations into orders will now start taking deliveries.
