First glimpse inside Tesla’s Gigafactory [Video]

Tesla’s Gigafactory, which is located near Reno in Nevada, was busy with outsiders this week. After CEO Elon Musk and SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive organized an event Wednesday night for Nevada politicians and top government officials, today local media were given access and were even allowed to take a few pictures inside.

We had a good look at the outside of the plant, especially with recent aerial shots, but we’ve seen very little of the interior of the massive building.

The factory is still under construction and currently only the first phase is up with an 800,000-square-foot footprint and 1.9 million square feet of space. Once completed, the Gigafactory is expected to have a total  operational space of about 13 million square feet.

We had a look at the inside of the lobby before, but never at the manufacturing area, where Tesla currently manufactures stationary energy storage products, Powerwalls and Powerpacks, and where it will start manufacturing battery cells with Panasonic by the end of the year.

During the media visit today, it looks like they were not allowed to take footage around the manufacturing area, but they were allowed to take several shots of it from the same angle, which is a first.

Here’s the video:

I wonder, what are those very curious racks with angled shelves? They seem to have lots and lots of them.

They still let the Gazette near anything?

I wonder, if this is only one part of the full factory, when do they plan to build the rest? In particular, why did they build a nice entrance hall with glass facades, a tarmac parking lot with fixed lampposts, and Supercharger stalls right where they will soon build the rest of the factory?

It hurts me to see they chose fluorescent lighting for that place. Terrible mistake.

First, those may be LED lights.
Second, what’s wrong with fluorescent lights?
