Tesla and Spotify release an app for the Model S via OTA update

Tesla sent an email to Model S owners today to announce that the company is pushing an update with a new media app for Spotify’s music streaming service.

So far it looks like only Model S owners in Europe have received the notice for the upcoming update, which Tesla says it will push today.

Tesla owners in Europe already have access to another music streaming service called Rdio, but the company recently folded and sold its assets to Pandora.

In the US, Tesla integrated Slacker and Iheart radio TuneIn in its media apps. We contacted Tesla to ask if they plan to bring Spotify integration to the Model S and X in the US/North America and we will update if we get an answer.

Update: Reportedly, the update will come with its own free Spotify Premium subscription (worth $10/month) and the update is only for Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong for now. Still no word from Tesla about plans for the US.

A translation of Tesla’s email to a Model S owner in Norway:

Now you can listen to Spotify in your Model S.

With today’s over-the-air software update, you can enjoy a new music experience via streaming with Spotify in your Model S.

The fully integrated Spotify system delivers the perfect music experience for everyone with on demand access to Spotify’s
catalog of over 30 million tracks. You can also access own Spotify’s music services, for storing songs and albums, playlists, and radio stations.

Simply select Spotify from the menu in your media player to start listening on Spotify. You can also use an existing Spotify Premium account to enjoy your playlists and radio stations. Log into your Spotify account via the Preference Settings – Applications – Media Player – Spotify.

Are you saying that we didn’t report this properly? Because we reported that Tesla SAY they are pushing the update, not that they ARE pushing the update.
